Pre Install Checklist for Fermi Red Hat V5.0.2

You'll need to acquire or know these items before installing Fermi Red Hat Linux on your system.

1. Fermi Red Hat Install floppy V5.0.2 from the PREP counter at FCC3W or from Yolanda at WH8NW. This is a specially modified install floppy for Fermi network installations. 2. What type of video card you have. (make, model, and amount of memory it has.) 3. What make and model ethernet card you have. 3a. Disable PnP on your card if it is a PnP card. Use a DOS disk to boot your system, after this is accomplished then remove the DOS floppy and insert the floppy included with your ethernet card. If you have a 3Com card there should be an bat file called pnpdsabl. Run this program to disable the PnP capability of your card. 3b. Verify that the correct port is activated, either BNC, AUI or UTP. On my 3Com 3c509 floppy I have a executable called 3c5x9cfg.exe. Running this executable enable me to select the port on the back of the card. The floppy supplied with your ethernet card should should have something similiar. 4. What is the hardware address of the ethernet card. This is often referred to as the MAC address and is needed to obtain your IP address from the Network Group. To get this you will need to use the Fermi Red Hat Install floppy obtained from FSS. Boot up to step 6 of the installation instructions below and type [alt][clt][F4]. From this screen you will be able to find the address. The number loOks something like 00:60:08:3e:34:ba It will be in one of the lines that begin with the the name of the ethernet device "eth0". 5. What are you going to name your machine? You need to tell the Network Group this before they can assign you an IP address. 6. Obtain an IP address from Networking Group. 7. The network's Netmask (supplied by Networking with IP address) 8. The network's Default Route (supplied by Networking with IP address) 9. If this machine will be "dual boot" Then you will need to decide which boot manager you will be installing.
